3 Online Marketing Mistakes that Could Be Costing You Psychotherapy Clients

When online marketing works for private practice, it can be one of the most consistent sources of new psychotherapy clients. But when it doesn’t work, it can be a source of frustration because many therapists have trouble figuring out what’s gone wrong.

In this video, I share with you three common mistakes I see therapists make when trying to get their practices found online. If you’ve ever felt that you’re feeling your way around with a blindfold on when it comes to online marketing, you’re not alone!

(NOTE: You’ll hear me refer to a process diagram I’ve created to help you understand the online marketing process I recommend for psychotherapists. You can download a copy of that here.)

Your website IS critical to your online marketing efforts. But it can’t do a very good job on its own. Think of your website as a hub. You need to create lots of different ways for people to travel to your hub, then you need to find ways to guide them along on their journey when they’re ready to leave. It doesn’t matter how professional and attractive your website is, if you’re not getting traffic to it, nobody can really see what good work you do. Likewise, if your website doesn’t properly engage your potential clients, then it isn’t a good use of your marketing dollars to spend money on pay-per-click advertising, such as Google AdWords.

In this video, I explain why this is a problem, and what you need in place BEFORE you start to advertise. (Often, one of the first recommendations I give my clients is to pause all their AdWords campaigns until they get a few other areas working properly.) Obviously, you’re a therapist, not an online marketer. That’s okay.

You don’t have to master every nuance of online marketing to get clients online. It‘s actually probably easier than you think. It’s mostly a matter of getting the right pieces in front of the right audience at the right time. For many of you, that means just a few simple tweaks or additions to your online marketing. The three mistakes (and solutions) I share in this video are a great place to start. And grab a copy of the diagram to help you understand the process I explain:
